A Traveller’s Guide to Christmas on the Gold Coast

A Traveller’s Guide to Christmas on the Gold Coast

15 December 2014

If a laid back, Aussie-style Christmas is what you’re after, you’ve chosen to be in the right spot. A Gold Coast Christmas is all about spending time at the beach, with friends on the water, drinking a few beers, and enjoying some delicious seafood. It’s also a city that knows how to party, guaranteeing you some memorable entertainment throughout the season.

Looking for something to do this Christmas? Try one of these festive ideas:

Christmas in Cavill

When: December

The spirit of Christmas is well and truly inside Cavill Mall this festive season, with dazzling lights, and a very special Santa perched up in the centre. Riding a surfboard towed by six kangaroos, it’s the perfect symbol of a Gold Coast Christmas. Take along the camera and enjoy free family photos in the sleigh between 12:00pm and 7:00pm daily.

Hire a BBQ boat

When: December

The ever popular BBQ boats are great for a day on the water with some yummy food. Carrying up to 10 passengers, they come complete with BBQ, cooler box, and toilet.

Visit a Seafood Market

When: December

Charis Seafood is the Gold Coast’s leading seafood supplier, but is slightly out of town in Labrador. For a closer stop, try the Fisherman’s Co-op or Peter’s Fish Market on Seaworld Drive.

Centre of Christmas

When: 12 December

Enjoy a sumptuous seafood buffet, a mouthwatering Christmas menu, and a premium selection of beer, sparkling, red and white wine, all while being entertained by lively band The Accidents.

Mayor’s Christmas Carols

When: 13 December

Each year in the Gold Coast’s Broadwater Parklands, the Mayor’s Christmas Carols delight both locals and holidaymakers. A huge range of performers will cover all the holiday favourites, and the kids will love the arts and craft workshops as well as the spectacular fireworks display.

Christmas Markets

When: 19 – 21 December

Nestled amongst an enchanting display of shimmering lights are the Gold Coast Christmas markets, the perfect place to stock up on your Christmas shopping or simply enjoy a pleasant ambience. As well as a huge number of stalls, there are also children’s activities to enjoy, free Santa photos, and great entertainment including a Saturday night Christmas movie on a giant outdoor screen.

Carols on the Beach

When: 21 December

Join renowned children’s entertainer Jay Laga’aia as he hosts a night of entertainment set on Surfers Paradise Beach. With acts from Rachael Beck, Paradise Kids Choir and Figaro, this is a beachside event not to be missed.

Christmas Day Lunch Cruise

When: 25 December

Cruise along the Gold Coast’s beautiful waterways on board a luxurious vessel and enjoy all the traditional Christmas delights, along with a delicious seafood buffet. It’s Christmas made easy and topped off with a beautiful view.

Enjoy Christmas lunch out

When: 25 December

The Gold Coast is home to some fantastic eateries, many of which are open on Christmas Day. Among the highlights are:

White Christmas Extravaganza @ The Watermark Hotel

For those who like a stress-free lunch, the Watermark Hotel is a popular place for Christmas, transforming its dining room into a white winter wonderland. Enjoy a delicious feast consisting of all the Christmas favourites – fresh seafood, a chocolate fountain, live entertainment, and a visit from Santa complete with gifts.

Christmas Day @ Four Winds 360° Restaurant

The views don’t get any better than those from Queensland’s only revolving restaurant. This year’s Christmas package includes a lunch or dinner, seafood buffet, three-hour drinks package, and a gift from Santa.

Seaduction @ Soul

Indulge in a decadent six-course lunch at the critically acclaimed Seaduction at Soul that includes lobster, scallops, turkey and wagyu beef, Christmas desserts, and mince pies.

New Year’s Eve Carnival

When: 27 Dec – 1 Jan

Not content with just one night, the Gold Coast plans to celebrate the build up to New Year with a 6 day carnival, complete with rides, slides, entertainment, and more. To top it all off, there’ll be a spectacular fireworks display to see in 2015.
