Gold Coast Sporting Events this August

Tuesday August 18th, 2015

What better way to spend August than watching, and participating in, some dynamic, thrilling sporting action on the Gold Coast?
There are great events to suit everyone this winter, from Australian Football to trekking, so why not check out the listings below and getting some dates in your diary.

Gold Coast Suns vs. West Coast Eagles

Round 18 of the 2015 Toyota AFL premiership promises to be a thrilling one.

When the West Coast Eagles finished ninth last year, almost everyone wrote them off as contenders for this season. How wrong they were! With 15 wins under their belt, they trail only Freemantle and Hawthorn in the premiership. Chances are, the Suns are going to have an epic fight on their hands.

The gates to the Metricon Stadium open at 5.30pm. Why not arrive in good time to enjoy the range of food and drink options plus live music, the AFL playground, and roving entertainment?

Ticketing and transport information can be found on the GC SUNS web site.

Where: Metricon Stadium home of the Gold Coast SUNS

When: Kick-off time 7.20pm, 1st August

Titans vs. Eels

The Parramatta Eels have been slowly rebuilding their form over the last 18 months, so this clash should be a NRL match to remember.

Stadium Gates open at 4.30pm, so there’s plenty of time to try the Titans’ inflatable skills challenge and rock climbing before the game. There’ll be giveaways too.

Where: Cbus Super Stadium

When: Kick-off time 7pm, 3rd August

Stinson Walk

This is a wonderful trek to mark a tragic and poignant event. On 19 February 1937, the Stinson airliner went missing on its regular route from Brisbane to Sydney, crashing into the Lamington Ranges.

Bernard O’Reilly, owner of the Lamington Guest House, believed that it hadn’t achieved sufficient height to clear the mountains and must have crashed in the McPherson range. He decided to hike into the area to try to find wreckage and any survivors on Saturday 28 February. He discovered the remains of the aircraft the next day, along with two survivors. Two pilots and two passengers had died in the initial impact and one man, who had gone to seek help, was found to have perished when he fell over a cliff. Two people survived and apparently asked their rescuer about the cricket scores when he first arrived.

This organised hike will retrace Bernard O’Reilly’s famous journey through the rainforest. Please note that it’s a challenging walk that will require a certain level of fitness.

Where:  Lamington National Park Road, Canungra, QLD, 4275

XCat Gold Coast Grand Prix

The exhilarating sport of XCAT has been described as ‘Formula One on the water’. XCAT is short for ‘Extreme Catamaran’ and, this year, the Gold Coast is hosting the 6th international race in the World Professional Powerboating Association XCAT World Series.

The race will take place on The Broadwater and Doug Jennings Park at The Spit where ‘XCAT Central’ will offer a Food Bazaar, Entertainment Quarter, Kids Zone and Pit Area. It’s expected that up to 10,000 vessels will be present around the Broadwater to witness the action.

Gold Coast Suns vs. Essendon

Expect another thrilling match as the SUNS take on the Bombers for Round 21 of the 2015 Toyota AFL season. Lying in 17th and 14th place respectively in the Premiership Ladder, things could hardly be closer.

The gates of the Metricon Stadium will open at 2.30pm, giving you the whole afternoon to enjoy some food and drinks before the game. There’s also the AFL playground and roving entertainment.
