Have You Been to Brisbane’s Top Rated Seafood Restaurants?

Have You Been to Brisbane’s Top Rated Seafood Restaurants?

17 May 2014

With the tidal pull of the Brisbane River right outside the door, and Moreton Bay just a boat ride away, it’s no surprise Brisbane’s seafood is sensational.
Many are on the river, but some are tucked away in Brisbane’s heritage streets. Here are some of the best:

    • Absolute waterfront is Jellyfish, where the kitchen strives to serve 8 to 14 species of fish every day. This is seafood devotion in motion – the chefs here pride themselves on delving into each species to learn all there is to know about it. Dine against a 180 degree backdrop of the river, the Story Bridge and the Kangaroo Point cliffs.

  • Not far away at Eagle Street, Kingsley’s Steak & Crabhouse is just what it sounds like, and more – tender steak and superb mudcrab served in a great riverside location. It is long on style and short on fuss, which makes it popular with the corporate set.
  • Who doesn’t love a seafood buffet? Going where the locals go is always a smart way to nail great  seafood, and locals flock to the buffet at the Brasserie on the River at the Stamford Plaza Brisbane.
  • To find what just might be Brisbane’s tastiest seafood, however, it pays to head away from the water’s edge. Gambaro’s in Petrie Terrace on the edge of the CBD, was named best Brisbane seafood restaurant in 2011 and 2012. It has ways with lobsters and Moreton Bay Bugs that have pulled the crowds since 1953. Favourites include WA crayfish with mornay or thermidor sauce laced with brandy and parmesan; and the perennial Queensland mudcrab in Singapore chilli sauce.
  • Overlooking ANZAC Square and Brisbane’s iconic clock tower from the Sofitel Brisbane Central, Privé249 serves “sexy” seafood with a French take. Think barramundi Veronique with baby squash, couscous pearls, and dill; or lightly smoked mackerel and a cabbage feuilleté floating on a cloud of potato and horseradish mousseline. By day, Queensland’s gorgeous natural light floods in. By night, Italian chandeliers and candles transform the room.

In the city’s north on Scarborough Boat Harbour, Morgan’s Seafood Restaurant brings diners to the source. Chef Deberah Healy puts an Asian-Med twist on contemporary Australian ingredients, such as wild barramundi in a star anise jus. Dining alfresco to the clink of the masts, with views of Moreton Bay and the Glasshouse Mountains, is pure Brisbane.
