Looking for a good excuse to plan a holiday? There are sporting events a-plenty in the vacation capitals of Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast in 2014. Here’s a selection for you to choose from when organising your next great escape.
Sydney Spring Carnival: This year the fun kicks off on September 13th for a packed month, ending on October 18th. Enjoy the races, entertainment, fashion, food, and hospitality of these unbeatable weeks of events.
Australian University Games: Over 30 different sports will be competed in at the 2014 University Games from September 28th to October 3rd. Competitors hail from 42 universities around the country; you don’t want to miss this one!
Emirates Australian Open: Golfing enthusiasts have only one place to be from November 27-30. The Australian Golf Club in Rosebery will host this annual event, so mark it on your calendar now.
V8 Supercars Sydney 500: From December 5-7, Sydney Olympic Park will be transformed for motorheads across the country. This event is filled with excitement, but is also conveniently family friendly, with children under 14 receiving free entry when accompanied by an adult.
Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race: An annual event to rival the rest. Every year on 26th December Sydney Harbour is packed to bursting point with spectators keen to see the start of the race. Secure yourself a spot early to catch the best of the action.
Straddie Salute Triathlon Festival: Located just east of Brisbane on beautiful North Stradbroke Island, the Straddie Salute Triathlon Festival will wrap up August over the 30th and 31st. Not a competition for the faint of heart, there are five killer events to choose from, as well as entertainment and hospitality aplenty.
The Sunday Mail Suncorp Bank Bridge: Kick off the start of spring on September 7th and join the 40,000 odd participators who will be running, walking, and jogging for their nominated charities. There’s both a 5 and 10 kilometre option, and people of all fitness levels are welcome to join.
Color Me Rad 5K Brisbane: Athletes at the ready, it’s time to proven your fitness credentials with this annual event on September 13th. Color Me Rad has partnered with the Make A Wish Foundation, and will see runners covered in different colours as they run the five kilometre course in Chermside. A spin on your traditional 5K.
Bravehearts Time Trial: Calling all cyclists, this is the event for you. This charity event takes place in Moreton Bay on November 30. Both teams and individual riders are welcome to throw their helmets into the ring for this 43 kilometre race.
Gold Coast Festival of Cycling: One of the most elite cycling events in Australia, the Festival of Cycling was borne out of an appreciation for the lauded European competitions and a desire to bring these events back home. Over the 27th and 28th September, the Festival will be held in Metricon Stadium, Carrara and the Gold Coast Hinterland.
Gold Coast Cycle Fest: Coming right off the back of the previous event, the annual Cycle Fest is held in the same location a mere week later from October 3-5, this time taking advantage of the long weekend. This one is open to all cycling club members Australia-wide.
Beach Bash: Looking for a sandy obstacle course? We thought so. This year’s Gold Coast Beach Bash will be held at North Kirra Beach over October 4th and 5th. Check it out today, you may even be able to snap up a few early bird tickets if you’re quick.
Castrol Edge Gold Coast 600: Featuring one of the very best and most difficult street circuits you could ever hope to drift, this year’s Castrol Edge will see your favourite V8 Supercar Championship drivers battle it out for the title from October 24-26. Pre-purchased tickets come with several free public transport options, and you can even bring along any kids under 14 free of charge.
