Oktoberfest Celebrations in Australia

30 December 2012

Considering that Aussies are so famous for loving their beer, it is little surprise that Oktoberfest is extremely popular Down Under. Regardless of which part of Australia you are in come October, you are sure to find Oktoberfest being celebrated with much style and enthusiasm. The following is a look at some of your best options for celebrating this great German occasion in Australia.

A great place to celebrate Oktoberfest in Australia is in the Nation’s capital, where the Harmonie German Club puts on a fantastic three-day long celebration featuring traditional German music, food and a huge selection of beer. For the past 45 years this dedicated club has drawn huge crowds to celebrate Oktoberfest in style, so if you are in Canberra at the right time next October, the Harmonie German Club is the place to be.

Australia’s largest Oktoberfest celebration takes place in Brisbane, being held over five days and spanning two consecutive weekends. Considered one of the top 10 Oktoberfest celebrations in the world outside of Germany, this fantastic event will have you drinking, dancing and embracing your inner German. German bands provide the authentic sounds for the celebrations, and many participants dress up in traditional German costumes for the occasion as well.

If you want to get stuck into Oktoberfest in Australia, there is no better place than in Brisbane, but if you plan to come, be sure to book your Brisbane accommodation early to avoid missing out.

As one of Australia’s most multicultural cities, it is no surprise that Melbourne gets into the swing of Oktoberfest in a big way. Every year, bars and clubs all over the city host Oktoberfest celebrations, with some of the more notable locations being the Hofbrauhaus, the German Club Tivoli, the European Bier Cafe and the ever-popular Lucky Coq.

One of the best things about celebrating Oktoberfest in Melbourne is that there is an abundance of short stay accommodation options close to the main parties, so you can partake fully in the celebrations without worrying about how you are going to get home.

South Australians are known for loving a good party, and considering that there is quite a sizeable German community in and around Adelaide, it is little wonder that Oktoberfest is big there. The German Club always hosts a massive celebration that includes slap dancing, traditional oompah music, and even strong-arm competitions, with many revellers dressing up in traditional German costume as well.

Alternately, for an authentic German treat, head out to the German founded towns of Walkerville and Lobethal just outside of the city and celebrate with some of Australia’s oldest German communities.

If you are looking to celebrate Oktoberfest in Sydney, you will have more than a few good options, starting with the huge German-Austrian Society celebration that is held at the Fairfield Showground each year. The Concordia Club is also well known for getting into the spirit of things, and if you are looking for a younger party, the University of NSW is well known for its epic Oktoberfest celebrations. Regardless of what part of Sydney you are in, you are bound to find a decent Oktoberfest celebration taking place nearby.
