The countdown is on to the Royal Queensland Show – fondly known as The Ekka! If you’re planning to be in Brisbane from 11-20 August in 2017, read on for tips on how to find the best attractions, food and Brisbane city accommodation for the event.
Meet furry and feathered creatures
The Ekka’s origins lay proudly in showing off the best of local agriculture, so the show is the perfect chance to get up close with livestock and other farm animals. Head to the Animal Boulevard to meet goats, lambs and chickens, then watch as horses and sheepdogs show off their skills at the Main Arena. Between the cow paddock and the cat competition, there’s plenty to see.
Seeking out the best food at the Ekka
No matter what your tastes are, you’ll find something tempting at the Ekka. The Woolworths Fresh Food Pavilion is a top place to stock up on cheeses, condiments and gourmet produce, while the Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show Cooking Stage will be serving up classes on making sausages, pasta and home cooked meals. If you prefer to be eating, the iconic Ekka Strawberry Sundae will please your taste buds while raising much needed funds for the Prince Charles Hospital Foundation.
Hunting out thrills and spills
Entertainment is something the Ekka is definitely known for. Watch a high-energy show at EkkaNITES at the Main Arena each evening involving stunts, fireworks, horses and visual effects. Watch Queensland’s best country music performers pit their talents against each other at the Country Music Showdown, then make your way to see the whipcracking competition and the Natural Fibres Fashion Parades.
Showbags to look out for
No show is complete without a showbag filled with goodies! For the adults, there’s a huge range of bags centred around health and fitness, cosmetics and even one for tea drinkers. For the kidlets, we love the Pirate Treasure costume bag and the Mad Science selection for plenty of fun without the usual sugar rush.
