Planning Ahead for Brisbane’s Riverside Fireworks
Wednesday March 28th, 2012
Every year, Brisbane plays host to one of the biggest and best pyrotechnic displays in the country, with the Riverside Festival fireworks display kicking off the annual Brisbane Festival. If you haven’t been to Brisbane for a while, or at all, this is a fantastic excuse to make the trip. Indeed, this awesome 25-minute explosive display is just one of many highlights within a booming city. If you do plan on coming for the fireworks, plan ahead, and keep in mind the following tips.
Where to stay
There is a huge range of accommodation options depending on your style and budget, with comfortable serviced apartments, funky Brisbane hotels,= and cute B&Bs making up some of your choices. Whatever you choose, try and get somewhere within walking distance of the riverfront, as it’s nice to have an easy trip home from the party.
Where to see it
Fireworks are set up predominantly on barges in the river, though there are also some on top of several of Brisbane’s bridges and skyscrapers too, so while you’ll likely see something regardless of where you are, head to the river for the best view. There are lots of beautiful parks along the riverfront, and even with large crowds it never feels suffocating, as people tend to spread out up and down the river. The absolute best viewing spot is to be on a boat on the river, and there are lots of dinner tours that offer deals to have a meal and see the fireworks.
There’s no shortage of decent restaurants along the riverfront, but if you hope to get a table to see the fireworks you’d better book early. All of the best spots sell out quickly, and you’ll find it near impossible to get a table without a booking on this particular night. Alternately, it’s fun to pack your own picnic-style dinner to take to the fireworks, and many people do set up with picnic baskets and blankets. This can save you a lot of money and be either a nice romantic date, or a fun evening with the family. The fireworks usually start around 7pm.
Stay for the festival
The fireworks display marks the beginning of the three-week long Brisbane Festival, which is definitely the best time of the year to be here; the city truly comes alive. If you’re lucky enough to be in Brisbane for the fireworks, you should at least stay for some of the Festival. For three weeks, Brisbane hosts everything from live music to art exhibits. Before you book your flights, check out an event schedule, as you don’t want to narrowly miss your favourite artist or some other awesome act.
The Riverside Fireworks is a spectacular way to kick off a three-week citywide festival, and does an excellent job of building the hype and providing a fun way for everyone to get involved in the celebrations. Few events start off with a bigger bang, and this event is as family friendly as you can get, so don’t miss a great opportunity for some awesome free entertainment.
