Planning Your Chinese New Year in Sydney

Planning Your Chinese New Year in Sydney

16 February 2018

Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival, marks the beginning of the new year in the Chinese calendar and brings with it an array of celebrations throughout Sydney. If you’re lucky enough to be in the city between 16 February and 4 March, be sure to seek out some of these incredible events!

Explore the New Year illuminations

The opening night of the ceremony sees a flood of light and good luck in Sydney Harbour. Make your way to Circular Quay from 5:30pm on 16 February to see the Sydney Opera House lit up in fortuitous red and fireworks shoot over the water in spectacular style over the Lunar Lanterns. Find the path to Customs House Forecourt each night from 8:30pm to experience Frameshift; a blend of b-boy dancing and aerial performance.

Celebrate the Year of The Dog

In 2018 the festival is rejoicing in the Year of The Dog, reflecting the personal qualities of honesty, responsibility and faithfulness. Two vibrant, 4.8 metre dogs created by artist Fan Dongwang will be standing guard at the entry to Chinatown on Dixon Street throughout the festival. At 5:30pm on 17 February you can also attend the very cute graduation ceremony of the NSW and ACT guide dogs as they walk the red carpet at Bligh & Barney Reserve. Look out throughout Circular Quay and city venues for other incredible illuminated animals from the Chinese Zodiac including giant rats, horses, monkeys, tiger, roosters, dragon and snake.

The community performance program

From 5:00pm on most weekend evenings of the festival you can see an amazing array of one-hour community performances at the Chinese New Year Stage in Bligh & Barney Reserve. Diverse, colourful and completely free to watch, these shows include everything from opera to kung fu and fashion, hailing from a range of community programs and groups.
