Quirky and Cool Mother’s Day Ideas on the Gold Coast
Wednesday May 7th, 2014
An easy hour’s drive from Brisbane, the Gold Coast is making the most of its stunning natural beauty this year to deliver a Mother’s Day Mum won’t find anywhere else.
Opera on the beach
Other cities may stage Mozart’s The Magic Flute indoors, but on a glorious May day on the Gold Coast, Opera Australia is taking it to the beach! Some of Australia’s finest opera singers will join Gold Coast community choirs to send song soaring into the sea air. What an invigorating stage – the Pacific ocean behind, the sky above, and squeaky-clean white sand between Mum’s toes! Even surf life clubs are taking part for a truly Aussie take on this classic piece. This will be a Mother’s day like no other. Performances take place May 9-11 at Marine Parade, Coolangatta; tickets are $35.
A rainforest high tea
The Mother’s Day 1,000 Metre High Tea is high tea at high altitude, 1,000 metres above the coast at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. Perched in a jungly mountaintop clearing in the volcanic Gold Coast hinterland, O’Reilly’s will serve a Mother’s Day afternoon with uplifting views west over the ranges. The family can climb the Tree Top Walk suspension bridge through the rainforest canopy, while Mum takes a treatment in the Lost World Spa. Afternoon tea with a glass of bubbly for Mum is $45.
Roadtrip to craft
As handmade items disappear from store shelves to e replaced by mass-produced imports, craft shows are becoming increasingly special. Many Mums will relish poring over the stalls by 50 south-east Queensland crafters at the Craft Extravaganza Mother’s Day at North Tamborine. While there, the family and Mum can explore the lush drive linking all Tamborine Mountain’s villages. A quick drive from the Gold Coast transports you to a lofty wonderland of National Park rainforest trails, cute villages and cafes. The views plunging back down the peak to the Gold Coast skyline are breathtaking. The Craft Extravaganza is held over three days, May 9-11.
A seafood cruise on the Gold Coast’s sparkling waterways is an oldie but a goodie that is sure to please seafood-loving Mums. A Mother’s day lunch cruise departs from Seaworld Drive, Main Beach, offering her a sensational array of dishes. Think prawns, spanner crab and more. Adults prices are $99, children $49. And there is no clearing up afterwards. Mum will thank you.
