Short Guide to the Coolest Sydney Events
30 June 2012
Sydney always has something cool going on, and the big events here always draw a crowd. The following are some of the coolest events to check out in Sydney.
Sydney Comedy Festival
Every year since 2005, Sydney has played host to some of the world’s funniest people, and holds one of the best comedy festivals in the world. In 2012, the festival went from April 24-May 12, and took place at some of Sydney’s best venues, including the Seymour Theatre, the Metro Theatre, the Enmore Theatre and the Sydney Opera House.
A celebration of gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender, queer and intersex people, this is also one of the largest festivals anywhere in the world, so if you want to experience something cool, then you have got to be in Sydney for this. Starting around the middle of February and continuing on for almost three weeks, Mardi Gras consists of dozens of parties, events and performances, including the hugely popular Dykes on Bikes event, and the must-see Mardi Gras parade. This is easily one of the biggest parties of the year in Australia.
New Year’s Eve
If you are someone who thinks that fireworks are cool, then you will find nothing more awesome than being at Sydney Harbour for the bringing in of the New Year. The fireworks display here on New Year’s Eve is among the best you will see anywhere in the world, and from the right serviced apartments you can watch it all from your balcony.
Carols in the Domain
For those who love Christmas, there is nothing cooler than getting to share your Christmas spirit with a few thousand other people by singing some Christmas carols together. Every year in Sydney on Christmas Eve, the huge inner city park known as the Domain fills up with families and regular Australians who spend a few hours together by candlelight singing all those carols we know and love. If you have young kids who are hyped for Christmas, or you just like to sing, Carols in the Domain is something everyone should go to at least once.
The start of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race
On Boxing Day each year, Sydney Harbour is absolutely swarming with big yachts for the start of this great Australian race, and it is something to see the huge super-maxi yachts tussle for position in their multi-million dollar state of the art boats. Being on the harbour in a viewing boat is incredible if you get the opportunity, though otherwise you can get a look at the fleet from almost any of Sydney’s eastern beaches as they tear down the coast.
There are literally hundreds of cool events that take place in Sydney in an average year, and if you are lucky you may just stumble across some of them. For the ones you know about in advance and want to make sure you get to take part in, book your short term accommodation, flights, tickets and everything else as early as possible. You know lots of other people are going to be coming too, so make sure you don’t get stuck without an apartment to stay in, or even worse, without a ticket to the event.
