Short Guide to Travelling to Sydney on Business

Wednesday February 22nd, 2012

Coming to Sydney on business is something that thousands of people do every year, but don’t be one of the people who gets chewed up and spat out by this 4 million-person city. For a large city, Sydney is quite easy to navigate and to find what you need, but be sure to do your homework so that your Sydney business trip is memorable for all the right reasons. The following is a quick rundown on some of the more important factors to be on top of when coming to Sydney on business.

Whether you are flying into the Domestic or International Terminal in Sydney, it’s easy to get to wherever you need to go from either place. If you need your own wheels there are at least six major rental car companies to choose from, as well as some higher end rentals in the form of limousines. You can also get downtown pretty easily on a shuttle bus or tour bus, or if you are staying at one of the fancier hotels, they sometimes have a free courtesy bus to get you there. If you are on a budget or just not in a particularly big rush, you can also catch the train from the airport to almost any part of Sydney, with a trip from the airport to downtown Sydney taking around 13 minutes and costing just over $15 per adult one way.

Depending on who is paying for your business trip, there are all kinds of accommodation options in Sydney, from the ultra comfortable and luxurious, to the simple and budget conscious. If you are planning on staying for more than a couple of days a great value option is to check into one of the beautiful serviced apartments in Sydney, where you will be able to relax, spread out and make a base for yourself. Otherwise hotels and hostels are a pretty mixed bag, so be sure to read the reviews and book ahead if you will be in Sydney during the school holidays or during any of the major annual festivals. If you are going to be in Sydney for a month or more, consider doing a house swap for a great way to save a heap of money and really settle into life in this beautiful harbour city.

Sydney has an excellent public transit system, so depending on where you will need to be in the city you may be able to get away with just taking public transit to get around. You can get some pretty good deals on daily, weekly or monthly transit passes and between the buses, trains, trams and ferries, you should have no worries getting from A to B in Sydney. However if you want to have a bit more freedom and see some great highlights just outside of Sydney, it is well worth hiring a car, as Sydney lies within a couple of hours’ drive of some fantastic places and it’d be a shame to be so close to places like the Blue Mountains and not get to see them. If you need to be travelling between cities in Australia, cheap flights are also regularly available.

If you are in Sydney on business, make sure that you squeeze in as much play time as you can, and see a few of the other sights close by. Who knows? Maybe you can reward yourself for all your hard work with a side trip to Brisbane or spend a few days lazing around in one of the luxury Gold Coast apartments.
