It’s the tourism capital of Australia for a reason – Sydney is the city where there is never a shortage of events, festivals, shows and exhibitions. There’s always plenty to choose from, but here are just 15 of the best entertainment options if you find yourself in the vicinity of Sydney this August.

1. The Lion King

This theatrical masterpiece has thrilled over 70 million audience members internationally since its inception. The Sydney shows wrap up on August 31, so get in while you still can.

2. The Life and Times of Governor Arthur Phillip

This colonial exhibition will take place at Hambledon Cottage and is available throughout the months of July and August. Explore the fascinating story of the first Governor of New South Wales in this guided tour.

3. The Great Fete

It’s well worth travelling into the suburbs for this one. The Great Fete is the biggest of its kind in North West Sydney, taking place in Samuel Gilbert Public School in Castle Hill. There will be some 15 rides, as well as raffles, prizes, music and dance, markets and novelty events. It’s no wonder The Great Fete usually attracts over 6000 people. The fete will be held Sunday 17 August.

4. Bondi Winter Magic

Think the beach is the last place to be in winter? Think again! Bondi in the cooler months is one of the most magical places in Sydney. The area is swarming with art, markets, and winter specials. Celebrations kick off on 1 July and wrap up on 31 October.

5. Theatre of dreams, theatre of play: nō and kyōgen in Japan

Curious about Japanese culture? Here’s your chance to learn more about it. This exhibition will take place at the Art Gallery of NSW in The Domain, featuring over 170 works. Masks, costumes, books, paintings and musical instruments will all be on display in this celebration of Japanese aesthetics, theatre and art.

6. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival

Sit front row and centre at one of Sydney’s best fashion festivals. Over three perfectly designed days from 21 to 24 August, you can catch shows, workshops, live performances and exclusive retail offers at Sydney Town Hall.

7. True Grit Military Inspired Obstacle Challenge

Not afraid to get your hands dirty? This tough-as-nails obstacle course is the first of its kind, designed by the Australian Special Forces. Over one intense weekend on 23 and 24 August, you’ll have a chance to travel 10-12 kilometres on foot, with over 30 different obstacles to overcome. It’s not like anything you’ve done before.

8. 129 Years of Military and Sydney Community History

To celebrate 100 years since the raising of of the 1st Light Horse in 1914, Parramatta City Council will showcase the history of one of Australia’s most decorated regiments in this street pageant. The regiment’s history traces back all the way to 1885, through to the modern Army Reserve. Take part this year at Lancer Barracks in Parramatta on 31 August.

9. City2Surf

It’s that time of year again. Every year since 1971 the Sun-Herald City2Surf attracts runners, joggers and walkers from all corners of the world, with some 80,000 participants each year. Get involved for this spectacular 14 kilometre run – it kicks off at Hyde Park on Sunday 10 August.

10. Multicultural Eid Festival and Fair

Celebrate the unique cultures of more than 35 different communities at the MEFF 2014. The festival will be held at Fairfield Showground on Sunday 10 August, with food, drinks, and rides galore.

11. The 5th Korean Film Festival in Australia

Korean film, food and culture to boot! The 5th KOFFIA takes place at Event Cinemas on George Street in the Sydney CBD from 13-21 August. Experience South Korea’s unique “Hallyuwood” offering and soak up some culture while you’re at it!

12. Bach in the Dark

Like your classical music a little left of centre? Bach in the Dark is an intimate performance by cellist Rachel Scott which will take place in the crypt of St James church only on August 15 and 16. Take a step into the dark…

13. SMASH! 2014

Passionate about anime? SMASH! is the ultimate celebration of manga, cosplay and all things Japanese pop culture. Head to Rosehill Gardens Grand Pavilion on August 9 and 10.

14. Country and Regional Living Expo

City slicker wondering about the simple life? This expo lets you walk regional New South Wales in a day, with all the information you could possibly need about relocating to a regional community. Job openings, businesses for sale and community information are provided – the only thing missing is you.
