Sydney has great festivals every year, but 2012 looks set to be bigger and better than ever. If you live in Sydney, mark your calendars, and if you don’t, think about coming for a visit. The following are just some of the highlights of Sydney’s 2012 festival line up.
Chinese New Year Festival
January 20th through February 5th 2012 will once again see Chinatown put on a wild display of celebration in the form of the eagerly anticipated Chinese New Year Festival. Consisting of a series of musical performances, talks, educational presentations, delicious foods, dancing, art displays, cultural exhibits and a huge karaoke competition (to name just a few of the highlights), this is a festival well worth checking out. It goes for over two weeks and many of the events are free, so come and educate yourself on Chinese culture in Australia, and have a great time while you are at it!
Greek Festival of Sydney
The year 2012 will see the Greek Festival of Sydney turn 30, with this great festival continuing to celebrate Greek culture in Australia on February 25th and 26th. The Greeks are well known in Australia for putting on great parties, so make sure you come and check out the tasty food, great dancing and fun celebration of all things Greek. This is one of the best cultural festivals of the year in Sydney.
Surry Hills Festival
April every year in Sydney sees a celebration of one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Sydney, Surry Hills. This area is known for its trendy bars, shops, bookstores and cafes, as well as being the home of some of the coolest apartments in Sydney . The Surry Hills Festival showcases all of these great attributes. The crowds are always big and there is never a shortage of great food and live music at this awesome festival, so if you haven’t made it to this event yet, make sure to check it out this year!
Festival of the Winds – September
One of the best festivals of the year to spend the day at with your family, the Festival of the Winds is a kite flying spectacular that is held on world famous Bondi Beach. Known for its great multicultural program and kid-friendly activities like face painting and animal exhibits, this is one of the most colourful and relaxing celebrations of the year. Needless to say, if you are a kite enthusiast, this is your big day, as not only will you be able to check out some amazing varieties of kites, but you will also be able to make your own thanks to the ever popular kite building workshop. Darling Harbour Fiesta – October
2012 will see the 18th year of what claims to be Australia’s hottest music and dance festival, the Darling Harbour Fiesta. Showcasing over 70 Latin music acts, flamenco and salsa dance performances, amazing food, art and crafts, you will also be able to learn a few moves yourself at the beginner dance classes on offer. Latino culture has long been an important part of the fabric of Australian society, so come down, check it out and bust loose at one of the highest energy festivals you’ll see in Sydney this year.
