Your Winter Escape to the Gold Coast

Your Winter Escape to the Gold Coast

10 July 2017

While much of Australia shivers through cold temperatures, the Gold Coast locals are living it up with their famously pleasant winter weather. Why should they have all the fun? Find a flight, reserve your accommodation and you could be soaking up some of that famed Queensland sun before you know it!

From June to October, meet the giants of the sea

Winter can be one of the best times to visit the Gold Coast as the humpbacks and other whale species migrate from Antarctic waters north to breed. From August onwards you can spot them heading back south, often with their brand-new babies. Book a whale watching tour and wave to the whales who will often interact with you by flipping a tail or a fluke. You may even be lucky enough to spot Migaloo, the famous white humpback who makes waves whenever he passes town!

Pack a picnic and relax

Much of the year, the Gold Coast can actually be too warm for a picnic in the park. Winter provides perfect mild sunny days for unpacking a spread of glorious Gold Coast food including local wines, cheeses, olives and fresh bread. There are even companies here who can deliver a hand-curated picnic hamper and blanket for you, including Picnic Perfection and Date Night Planner. For picnic spots we recommend Cascade Gardens in Broadbeach with its great playground, or Burleigh Hill for a picturesque beach view as you dine and relax (which is also ideal for spotting a whale or two).

What to do in the Gold Coast when it rains

Gold Coast winters are notoriously sunny and dry, however if it does happen to rain while you visit there are still plenty of reasons to explore. You could go indoor skydiving or play a round of virtual golf, catch a live gig in Surfers Paradise or be amazed at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! If it’s really pelting down, why not stay in your suite and make the most of the free, unlimited and high-speed Wi-Fi by watching movies overlooking the city skyline?
