Top 5 Things to Do During Your Sydney Layover

Top 5 Things to Do During Your Sydney Layover

Wednesday October 12th, 2016

So, you have a 24 or 48 hour layover in Sydney with some time to kill. There’s no need to rough it in the airport or a sub-par airport hotel – instead, make the most of your short time in town with our top 5 layover tips.

1. Free yourself of baggage

If you’re an international visitor the first question you should ask is, “Can I leave the airport during a layover?” It’ll be important to check and attend to any visa, customs and timing restrictions that will apply to your journey. Next, you’ll want to drop any luggage off at your airport accommodation or at Smarte Carte storage, available at both terminals of Sydney Airport. Next, onto the fun!

2. Explore Circular Quay

If you only have half a day to explore Sydney during your layover, we recommend making your way directly to Circular Quay to take in the views of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. Our hot tip is to catch the train between the airport and Circular Quay if you’ll be catching a flight soon, as taxis can be delayed by traffic during peak hour.

3. Visit Taronga Zoo

Taronga Zoo is synonymous with having a good time in Sydney and offers a vast menagerie of native and international animals to meet. The zoo is a great way to entertain bored kids and teens, offers spectacular views back towards the city and it can take a whole day to enjoy bird shows, seal shows, the action-packed Wild Ropes experience and even a decadent high tea. If you have the time, we’d suggest getting there by ferry from Circular Quay for even more Sydney magic.

4. Add in some delicious food

There are plenty of excellent cafes and restaurants near Sydney airport to visit during your brief visit. Mascot Central Retail Precinct offers a myriad of modern Australian and multicultural fare, from smooth Belgian chocolate at Oliver Brown to Mediterranean and Lebanese cuisine at Mezza Train. One of our nearby favourites is the ever-popular Grounds of Alexandria, offering excellent coffee and locally sourced fare in a lush garden setting. Or, you might choose to pick up freshly baked bread, local wine and gourmet deli goodies and relax at your accommodation with its stunning views.
