Sydney’s Best Annual Events

22 January 2013

Regardless of what time of year you are in Sydney there is always something big going on, and the following is a brief look at a few of Sydney’s best annual events.
Mardi Gras

For those who like their big events to be as glamorous as they are fabulous, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is easily one of the city’s best annual events. Mardi Gras consists of over a week of partying, with two of the major highlights being the wildly popular Dykes on Bikes event and the epic Mardi Gras Parade. You will not find a more outrageous, colourful, good spirited and entertaining celebration anywhere in the world, so book your Sydney accommodation ASAP and celebrate freedom, diversity and style at Mardi Gras in 2013.

The start of the Sydney to Hobart

You don’t need to be a fan of yacht racing to appreciate this spectacular annual Sydney event, which involves dozens of yachts racing from Sydney Harbour down the east coast of Australia and across to Hobart on the island of Tasmania. Some of the bigger boats are over 60 feet long, and seeing them battle it out on Sydney Harbour before heading down the coast is like no other sight in world sport. Whether you get on one of the spectator boats on the harbour or head to one of Sydney’s many southern beaches to watch the fleet go by, the atmosphere is amazing and you’ll never forget seeing those huge boats roar past.

New Year’s Eve celebrations

There are few cities that can compare with Sydney when it comes to being beautiful, and being here for New Year’s Eve will be something you will never forget. Whether you head out on a harbour cruise, get tickets to one of the many parties or find a good spot on land to see the fireworks, New Year’s Eve in Sydney consists of a wide array of incredible events. However, if you are planning on spending New Year’s Eve in Sydney this year, book your stay early, because all of the best Sydney hotels get booked up quickly.

The City2Surf

If you are an active type, head to Sydney for one of the world’s largest competitive running races, the 14km City2Surf, when around 85,000 people take part in what is a fantastic annual event. There is always a festival atmosphere, and many even complete the course in fancy dress costumes, all the while cheered on by huge crowds of spectators. The route takes you from Sydney’s CBD through some of the oldest parts of the city, and with the finish line down at Bondi Beach you can head straight into the surf to cool off as soon as you finish the race.

The State of Origin

This brutal three-match rugby league series sees the states of New South Wales and Queensland go head to head, with matches played in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and the Sydney fixture is easily one of the city’s best annual events. The crowd in Sydney is a sea of blue in support of the local team, and whether you go to the game or watch it at the pub with your mates, it is a spectacle you will never forget.
