Sydney plays host to some pretty huge sporting events each and every year, and the following is a brief look at some of the biggest ones.
The Sydney to Hobart
Even though it is only the start of this epic race that takes place in Sydney, it is easily one of the most incredible spectacles in world sport, with hundreds of spectator boats packing the gorgeous Sydney Harbour as the fleet of competitors await the starting gun.
Once the race starts, it is all about the big super-maxi yachts, which get as big as 90 feet long and have masts up to 135 feet high, and their battle out and around the Heads is unbelievable to watch. The best part about this fantastic annual Sydney event is that you can get a good look at it for free, and thousands do as they flock to the harbour foreshore and the beaches south of the Heads.
The Australian Open Golf Championship
While this magnificent sporting event isn’t always played in Sydney, it quite often is, and once again in 2013 some of the world’s best golfers will return to the impressive Lakes Golf Course for this spellbinding championship. Whether you play golf yourself or not, you are sure to enjoy it, as it is truly incredible what these guys can do, and there is something special about roaming around the course as part of the gallery. For a sporting experience you’ll be talking about weeks later, head to The Lakes in December this year for one of Sydney’s biggest and best sporting events.
The Rugby League Grand Final
This is another of those great sporting events that does not permanently reside in Sydney, but was held in front of almost 90,000 people at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium again this year, and once again was an absolute blockbuster. The quickness, toughness and all-round skill of these guys is absolutely incredible, so if you are someone that likes your big events and tough guy sports, they don’t get much bigger and tougher than this.
For those who like to participate in their sports more than just watch them, the annual 14km City2Surf run is just what you need. The field is one of the largest of its type in world of running, with over 80,000 participants, and there is always a fantastic carnival atmosphere in full effect, including runners and walkers in all sorts of creative fancy-dress outfits.
One of the popular things about this sporting event is that, after starting in the centre of the city and winding its way through the streets, the 14km finish is at Bondi Beach, and more runners than not end up heading straight into the surf upon finishing the race. Whether you prefer to stay close to the start or the finish line, there are all sorts of fantastic serviced apartments and options for group accommodation located nearby both.
The SCG Test Match
Any summer that the Australian cricket team hosts a touring international side there is always a number of fantastic traditional style cricket Test Matches played, but if you can only attend one of these games, nothing comes close to the SCG Test for an all-round cricket experience. Played over five days, the Sydney Test is different every time, but the one thing you can be sure of is that the atmosphere will be amazing and the ground itself is absolutely beautiful, making this consistently one of Sydney’s biggest and best sport events.
